The name fayr stems from the 12th century English song Bryd oné brerè, Bird on a briar, in which the second verse is said: yhe is fayr and flur of allé (she is fair, and the flower of all). Also Shakespeare in his famous sonnet no 18 writes: and every fair from fair sometime declines (which in English means and everything beautiful sometime will lose its beauty). Rilke says beauty is the beginning of terror. There are many things fayr and pretty.

Fair is the kingcup that in meadow blows,
Fair is the daisy that beside her grows;
Fair is the gillyflower, of gardens sweet,
&
Fair is the marigold, for pottage meet;
But Blouzelind’s than gillyflower more fair,
Than daisy, marigold, or kingcup rare.
